As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things musical, I have always been hesitant to admit my love for the iconic 1980s West End show, Les Misérables. Its over-the-top performances and synth-heavy soundtrack often seemed too kitsch even for my own eclectic tastes. However, after a recent re-watch, I was reminded of just how much I adore this musical masterpiece.

But Les Mis isn't the only 80s mega-musical that has won me over. I have always had a soft spot for Chess, which boasts an unforgettable soundtrack courtesy of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA. The music is simply sublime, with iconic numbers like 'One Night in Bangkok' and 'I Know Him So Well' that never fail to get stuck in my head.

And then there's Blood Brothers, another West End show that has grown on me over the years. Despite its sometimes questionable accents (I'm looking at you, Scouse performances!), this anti-Thatcher parable is a powerful exploration of social class and the consequences of privilege. Its themes are both timeless and timely, making it a true masterpiece of musical theatre.

Of course, not all 80s mega-musicals have aged as well as these three. Blood Brothers may be an acquired taste, while Les Misérables' melodrama can sometimes feel overwhelming. But there's something about the sheer spectacle and bombast of these shows that continues to captivate me.

Perhaps it's the nostalgia factor – after all, who didn't grow up belting out 'I Dreamed a Dream' at the top of their lungs? Or maybe it's simply the fact that these shows have become an integral part of our cultural heritage, with iconic songs and characters that continue to inspire new generations of musical theatre fans.

Whatever the reason, I am proud to admit my love for these 80s mega-musicals. They may not be cool or trendy by today's standards, but they are undeniably classics – and as such, they will always hold a special place in my heart.
